Let Me Break it Down for You:

When we feel anxious, overwhelmed, fatigued, irritable, or apathetic, we experience physical symptoms, too, like sleep disturbances, psychomotor agitation, trouble concentrating, mind fog, muscle tension, and other physical distress.

When we experience these physical symptoms, they become negative, sometimes damaging, emotions like agitation, despair, or even anger. Those emotions dictate our behavior. We act rude, withdrawn, defensive, unsociable, or other undesired characteristics.

See where I’m going with this? We start acting like a b*tich.

The Backstory:

I previously worked at an inpatient psychiatric hospital. The patients were mostly there for high anxiety and depression, often leading to extreme self-harm or suicidal ideations or attempts.

When the patients stepped off the elevator and on to our unit, they were experiencing many emotions. Scared, overwhelmed, curious, anger, upset, and more.

All patients were given a welcome folder. It had information like the daily schedule, the food menu, and the unit map. But I quickly noticed there was no information on how they could move through the symptoms that brought them to us in the first place.

I knew the best way to serve in that difficult moment was to help them out of the unknown and give some concrete information about what to expect during their stay on the unit.

I created a list of 99 coping skills with the hopes they could manage their current emotional state.

It was well received. The patients liked having tangible, actionable ways to cope. After working with many patients on healthy coping skills, I soon started to realize something…

If they had access to these coping skills earlier, it’s likely they wouldn’t have needed high-level inpatient psychiatric care.

And BOOM, in that moment, walking from the north wing of the unit to the nurses station, it hit me: I need to write a book about how to use these easy, healthy coping skills.

And so, I Got 99 Coping Skills and Being a B*tch Ain’t One was conceived.
